“It is not likely that employers and commercial insurance plans are
going to continue to pay on a fee-for-service basis. If and when,
starting next year, ACOs work through their adolescence and become a new
structure in the delivery system, I think that health insurance plans
and large employers will jump at the opportunity to change their
incentives from fee-for-service to performance-based payments. The ACO
allows for that group of providers to participate in those types of
contracts. I fully expect commercial health insurance plans to jump on
