“I believe the key to both short and long term success for ACO’s lies in the reimbursement models. The willingness of providers, both physicians as well as hospitals, to make change will depend on the availability of resources. Medicare shared savings, if any, are not determined or distributed until well after the efforts and deployment of resources to improve patient care has occurred. As each year goes by and only 25% of the ACO’s see any shared savings, the willingness to continue to invest the time, personnel, and resources will be questioned."

Since the start of 2014, an estimated 4.5 million more people have been included in accountable care arrangements, bringing the total to 23.5 million covered ACO lives, only 7.8 million of which are in Medicare.
