“Telehealth/telemedicine is a significant addition to patient care both in the acute care setting (communication with offsite specialists and family members) and on the outpatient side, especially surgical follow-up and chronic disease care or transitions of care. Its use is still limited by some of the technology -- not all patients have computer or smart phone access, nor are clinicians facile with the technology -- so a simple phone call is much easier at present. In addition, most clinicians are not yet reimbursed for this service, which is a barrier. I suspect 2016 is the year when many of these issues will be rectified and more widespread use will be seen in the upcoming years.”
- George Valko, MD, Gustave and Valla Amsterdam Professor of Family and Community Medicine; Vice-Chair for Clinical Programs and Quality, Department of Family and Community Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University; Medical Director, Jefferson Family Medicine Associates.
