"A successful ACO requires joining forces with other healthcare systems, making investments in systems and staff, and adopting strong population health management. It can be difficult for providers to effectively line the pieces up, especially as the COVID public health emergency continues. Our model lowers the barrier to ACO participation while providing a sustainable path forward to earn savings and lower total costs."

Factoid

A recent study in Psychiatric Services analyzed data from the 2017–2018 National Survey of ACOs, in which 399 respondents answered questions on integrated care strategies. 76% of these reported using at least one integrated care strategy in at least one location. 70% used care managers, followed by use of a patient registry (37%) and colocation of a primary care clinician in a specialty mental health setting (30%).

How cutting off subsidy payments to insurance companies would affect Obamacare ACO Implementation A Team Sport

In order to succeed in an ACO, all participants in the facility need to be aware of the goals and objectives of joining an ACO, and each individual needs to understand what role they play in the success of the ACO. Members of the team should be engaged both in the design of the implementation and the potential reward for participation. Consequently, staff and providers need to believe it will add value both to their patients' lives and to theirs.
