“The first-year results from the Pioneer ACO Model show early signs that provider-led ACOs can successfully reduce the cost and improve the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries. In 2012, Pioneer ACOs generated over $87 million in cost savings. They also reduced cost growth for their attributed beneficiaries by over 60%, compared to similar populations. Although the financial results varied among the Pioneers -- only 13 of the 32 generated enough savings to qualify for bonuses -- Pioneer ACOs uniformly delivered strong quality scores. These initial results offer clear evidence that ACOs can succeed. The initial Pioneer results, however, remind providers that they must carefully stage the transition to risk-based payments, balancing transformation in both care models and payment models. Seven of the 32 Pioneers are migrating to the Medicare Shared Savings Program, a lower-risk, lower-reward ACO structure. These organizations are not abandoning their population health ambitions, but they seek a slower transition path to better synchronize their payment transformation and care transformation. Across both the public and the private sectors, the transition to population health is well underway.” Rob Lazerow, Practice Manager, Research and Insights,The Advisory Board Company

"The number of women in the physician workforce has doubled over the last 20 years, from 17 percent in 1990 to 30 percent in 2010. The Future Landscape Survey reports that 63.5 percent of physicians predict that women will comprise more than half of the physician workforce by 2030."
