AJMC: 8 Per-Beneficiary Rates for MSSP ACOs With a Teaching Hospital versus Those Without

1. Beneficiaries at MTH ACOs had 1.5% lower spending overall than at NTH ACOs.
2. MTH ACOs had 9.7% lower per-beneficiary annual spending in the acute care inpatient setting than NTH ACOs.
3. MTH ACOs had 3.7% higher per-beneficiary annual spending in the outpatient setting than NTH ACOs.
4. MTH ACOs had lower emergency department utilization in both visits resulting in an admission (–7.8%) and those that remained in outpatient settings (–4.3%) than NTH ACOs.
5. MTH ACO beneficiaries' primary care visit rates were 14.6% lower than at NTH ACOs.
6. MTH ACO beneficiaries' specialist visit rates were 12.2% higher than at NTH ACOs.
7. Beneficiaries covered by MTH ACOs and receiving hospital care were 77% more likely to receive care from a hospital within the ACO.
8. MTH ACOs had lower mortality rates than NTH ACOs by up to 2.2 percentage points depending on the patient age group.
