"AI technology has the potential to transform medicine. AI-based tools can efficiently scan massive amounts of healthcare data and identify hidden patterns. These patterns can be used to detect diseases, like cancer and dementia, at an early stage. Our data science research team is uniquely positioned to leverage this innovative technology to develop and validate tools to identify patients with unrecognized dementia or patients at high risk of developing dementia in the future."
- Yasser El-Manzalawy, Ph.D., principal investigator and assistant professor of Translational Data Science and Informatics at Geisinger

According to a recent study, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) detection tools during colonoscopy screenings decreased costs from $3,400 to $3,343 per screened individual, a savings of $57 per person. Compared to no screening, the analysis found a 44.2% relative reduction in the incidence of colorectal cancer for screening colonoscopies without AI versus 48.9% for colonoscopies with AI. Also, there was a 48.7% relative reduction in colorectal cancer mortality for screenings without AI versus 52.3% relative reduction for those with AI when compared with no screening.
