"What is most worrying to me is that there has been fairly profound consolidation among hospitals and when they gain market power they have the ability to raise prices. They have the ability to gain more favorable contractual terms, which allows them to raise prices and resist the new, more sensible payment reforms."
-Zack Cooper, Associate Professor of Health Policy, Yale University

Patients with primary care were more likely to use high-value care such as cancer screening (78% vs 67% of patients without primary care), with the largest between-group differences observed for colorectal cancer screening (16% difference) and mammography (14% difference). In addition, patients with primary care -- defined as first-contact care that is comprehensive, continuous, and coordinated -- filled more prescriptions each year (14.1 vs 10.7) and were more likely to have a routine preventive visit within the past year (72.2% vs 57.5%).
