“Humana is
dedicated both to value-based care and to addressing social
determinants of health. This new (valued-based care) program is
a way for us to deepen those commitments, by interweaving both
into our work with clinicians, toward a more holistic approach
to care. The new model is, therefore, a logical ‘next step’ for
us, as it broadens the scope of patient care to more
holistically improve health outcomes—social determinants of
health are linked to an increased risk of chronic medical
conditions, so it’s critical that we address these key barriers
to good health.” |

Special Episode: Bipartisan Rx for America's Health Care
Broadcasting from the Bipartisan
Policy Center in Washington, DC, where we are releasing a major
report that has been three years in the making. BPC is a Washington, DC-based
think tank that actively fosters bipartisanship by combining the
best ideas from both parties to promote health, security, and
opportunity for all Americans. I’m sitting down with two of my
“Big 10” colleagues, who are
going to share how the sausage got made on this health care
reform compromise, and highlight some key details in the report.

Insurers Sank Connecticut’s ‘Public Option.’ Would A
National Version Survive?
Health care costs were rising. People couldn’t afford coverage.
So, in Connecticut, state lawmakers took action. Their solution
was to attempt to create a public health insurance option,
managed by the state, which would ostensibly serve as a low-cost
alternative for people who couldn’t afford private plans.

A Ten-Year Engagement: The Media And The ACA
October 1, 2013, marked an important moment in health policy
history. Most of the federal government shut down after Senate
Republicans tried to force President Barack Obama to delay the
launch of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). On the same day the
ACA’s new federal Marketplaces failed to launch as scheduled, as
a result of widespread computer glitches. And that night
comedian Jimmy Kimmel demonstrated everything that had been
wrong with the media’s coverage of the passage and
implementation of the health law in one four-minute bit.

Checkup for $30, Teeth Cleaning $25: Walmart Gets Into
Health Care
The main drag of Calhoun, Ga., a town of about 16,000 an hour’s
drive north of Atlanta, is dotted with pawnshops, liquor stores,

across America, the local Walmart fulfills most everyday
needs—groceries, car repairs, money transfers, even hair
styling. But now visitors to the Calhoun Walmart can also get a
$30 medical checkup or a $25 teeth cleaning, or talk about their
anxieties with a counselor for $1 a minute.
