Quote
“Although research is conflicting about whether narrow networks affect quality of care, continuum of care and access, I would predict that there is going to be pushback as networks get narrower. Excluded providers will push back, and so will patients who have to change their provider relationships, especially when they find out how much they have to pay for out-of-network care. Exclusive provider networks -- much as the chosen providers love them -- will be even more unpopular, especially if the provider was chosen on the basis of price and not outcomes. We went through this with the ‘HMO Wars’ in the 1990s, and here we go again. I wish I understood why we simply won’t learn that Americans want choices, even if they don’t exercise them."
- Emily Friedman, Independent Health Policy and Ethics Analyst.
