"Healthcare grew from 13.1% of U.S. GDP in 2000 to nearly 18% in 2014. In 2012, approximately 50% of the public had at least one chronic disease. Considering that chronic diseases account for 84% of every healthcare dollar spent, we need rapidly deployable solutions that reduce the occurrence and improve management of chronic diseases. To provide better healthcare, we must adopt prevention-based models leveraging technology to achieve access and success for patients. Here the internet of everything (IoE) may offer an "industrial revolution." eHealth solutions free patients and their providers from time- and geography-bound care, while also demonstrating that routine medical care is actually made better by technology. Medical IoE links innovative home-based sensors that monitor vital health statistics with medical algorithms designed to rapidly detect issues, which providers can proactively address."

-Jeffrey S. Durmer, M.D., Ph.D., Cofounder/Chief Medical Officer, FusionHealth, Atlanta, Ga.

Factoid
"According to a recent report from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), more than 40 million adults in America (18% of adults) currently have some type of behavioral health problem. Of those 40 million adults, nearly 20 million are estimated to have a substance abuse problem, and approximately nine million have severe mental illnesses."
