“When I look at the telehealth literature, I see a divide between stand-alone gadgetry and gadgetry that is paired with human resources. The latter includes nurses or other non-physician professionals who are responsible for contacting and aiding the consumer when the telemonitoring fires an alert. Those medical homes that rely on stand-alone systems will need to invest in additional FTEs to manage telehealth. Medical homes that rely on systems with nurses will need to accommodate partnerships, modify their workflows, and be prepared to respond quickly when an outside nurse calls. Does it sound like the bad old days of disease management? You betcha. The good news is that patients stand to benefit and modern medical homes have a much greater understanding of the value of teaming.” Jaan E. Sidorov, MD, FACP, Author, Disease Management Care Blog, Health Care Consultant

Factoid
"The latest update of the Patient-Centered Care Index (PCCI), a nationwide, quarterly survey of 2,500 patients who have received physician care in the last six months, places the PCCI at 3.46 on a 5.0 scale. A score of at least 4.0 is required for patients to agree that physicians are effective at patient-centered care, so this is a middling score that leaves much room for improvement."
