“Viewing telemedicine in
the broader context of the IHI Triple Aim, one ‘sweet spot’ that meets
all three goals is the ability to seek urgent care via telemedicine.
Large integrated physician organizations have the ability to rotate
provider calls for urgent care via telemedicine systems. With a minimal
capital outlay, and minimal per provider work output, organizations can
fully ‘staff’ after-hours, urgent care and meet many of the needs of
patients seeking urgent care through telemedicine. This lends itself
particularly well to medical home scenarios where the treating physician
has full access to the patient’s medical record, and can chart the interaction in real time. The
benefit to the patient is rapid, convenient, and efficient service from
the patient’s own medical group. I anticipate significant expansion of
this type of service over the next several years.” - Ken Cohen, MD, FACP, Chief Medical Officer, New West Physicians. |
