"It's pretty well known
that initially after a traumatic injury, patients who are over the age
of 50 have a worse mortality rate. They also take longer to recover from
their injuries. They are also more susceptible to suffering psychoses
when they’re hospitalized, particularly if they’re in the ICU... Off the
top of my head, I'd say that older patients are two- to three-fold more
likely to have these issues than a younger patient with a traumatic
injury."
- Ben L. Zarzaur, M.D., Associate Professor of
Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
