“I think it’s pretty clear
that as millions of Americans receive needed insurance coverage and go
out seeking a regular source of primary care, they’re going to have
difficulty finding one. But let’s face it, there are numerous drivers of
our primary care shortage, including an inadequate number of health
professionals practicing primary care as well as an enlarging and aging
population. However, there might be a silver lining in all of this pain.
If the American public’s frustration with this acutely exacerbated
primary care shortage is loud enough, it just might motivate our various
leaders to take specific steps to quickly rebuild our primary care
workforce pipeline. That being said, our primary care system has been so
devoid of investment for so many years, there will likely be a
significant lag time for this new workforce to show up ready to work.”

implementation of Patient-Centered Medical Homes have passed the
“Tipping Point” from their launching as isolated experiments to becoming
one of the most broadly accepted elements of reform, with over 28,000
primary care physicians in over 5,000 sites receiving NCQA recognition
alone since 2008.
