"Even when relatively straightforward, diagnoses can follow a decade of systemic but subclinical form of change or decay. Yet, populations are made up of individuals who rapidly experience and react to their own health conditions. Current efforts to contextualize decay by examining and characterizing such declines may provide a more realistic comparison for population health. As such, population health may be best measured by capturing not only how long, but also how well, people live. Current efforts have focused on understanding risk using longitudinal, monitoring studies to examine cardiovascular risk, biological age, allostatic load, fatiguability and physical performance."

-Sean Clouston, Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine, Program of Public Health, Stony Brook University

"About 29.1 million people, or 9.3% of the U.S. population, already have diabetes. In addition to those with the disease, an estimated 86 million people aged 20 or older have pre-diabetes. Without moderate exercise and weight loss, between 15% and 30% of these people will develop type 2 diabetes within five years."
