Elevance Health: 5 Maternal Health Outcomes for Women With and Without Doula Care

1. Prevalence of C-section: 23% with doula care; 36% without doula care
2. Prevalence of Vaginal Birth after C-section: 5% with doula; 2% without doula
3. Prevalence with a Postpartum Visit: 64% with doula; 41% without doula
4. *Prevalence of Postpartum Anxiety and/or Postpartum Depression: 6% with doula; 12% without doula
5. Prevalence of any pregnancy complication: 35% with doula; 27% without doula

Notes: Report includes outcomes from women enrolled in Medicaid managed care who received doula services (n=869) with those who did not receive doula services (n=1,094,005), from nine Elevance Health-affiliated Medicaid managed care plans between 2014 and 2023. The doula programs focused outreach efforts to women with higher pregnancy risks. *Results based on women who initiated doula care in their first trimester.
