"Much of our standard of care in cancer is grounded in research with mostly white populations. Our goal is to figure out how we can change that — in how scientists approach their work, how medically underserved communities can learn more about pioneering cancer research and treatments and how care delivery systems can make it easier for patients to learn about clinical trials."
 -  Nina Bickell, MD, MPH, professor of population health science and policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and co-lead of cancer prevention and control at Mount Sinai's Tisch Cancer Institute.

Factoid
A survey of 714 practicing physicians revealed that only about 40 percent of physicians were very confident about their ability to provide the same quality of care to patients with a disability and 56% strongly agreed that they welcomed people with a disability into their practices. The study...also related that 82% of physicians believed that people with a significant disability have a worse quality of life than those without a disability.

PCC: 4 barriers to oral health care

1. The uninsured rate for dental insurance is four times higher than the uninsured rate for medical insurance.
2. Of the 2.4 million emergency department visits for a dental problem annually, up to 70% are by uninsured and publicly insured adults. Many of these are preventable.
3. Traditional Medicare, with 37 million beneficiaries, offers no dental coverage.
4. Dental coverage for low-income adults on Medicaid depends on where they live. 11 states do not provide dental benefits; 35 states limit coverage; and 19 states require a copay.
