"Ultimately, patient safety depends on hospitals having the right staff, at the right time and in the right place. By analyzing data, hospitals can closely examine workload indicators to determine and justify the staffing levels and mix required to care for their patient population safely, efficiently and affordably. The Emergency Department (ED) offers a prime example. As a result of the Affordable Care Act, we're seeing a substantial increase in ED visits and in psychiatric patients held in the ED. This can lead to violent behavior by distressed psychiatric patients, staff taxed by a complex patient population and overcrowding - all of which can impact the safety of every patient. Understanding this patient population enables hospitals to relook at their ED staffing mix. In recent client engagements, we've aligned the staff complement to the ED patient population and expanded care managers and social workers within the ED, among other measures."
