In 2017, ESRD [end-stage renal disease] patients comprise 0.2% of the entire patient population; represent less than 1% of Medicare beneficiaries, but 7.1% of Medicare fee-for-service expenditures; and cost the system an annual average cost of $87,597 per patient."
