"A development that has been occurring lately, with, for me, unpredictable outcomes is the development of data science/Big Data/machine learning. My background has been in statistical modeling and that is the type of model that I have seen developed over the 20 or so years that I have been in this business. However, in recent years we have come to hear a lot about data science/Big Data/machine learning. Claims are made for these models that are very appealing because they seem to perform better than tradition parametric models. I don't think I have ever seen a head-to-head comparison between the two types of models, however. (We should remember that parametric models are more straightforward to interpret and their confidence intervals tend to be smaller.) Perhaps 2017 will be the year when we finally get to see, on a level playing field, whether there is anything to the hype about these models and whether they can demonstrate superior performance. And a bonus development: whether predictive performance actually matters in an operational environment in which it is increasingly difficult to engage with target patients."

"The @Home study yielded positive results, including: Slowed disease progression, as measured by patient risk scores. The risk score stabilized: 2% increase in the pilot group compared to 31% increase in the control group."
