"Risk adjustment tools have been used for many years to develop ‘case mix’ scores for patient or population subgroups to better understand their need for appropriate levels of staffing resources. And of course staffing (either internal hires or external contractors) is tantamount to ‘operational expenses’ for most organizations. This type of risk-adjusted allocation of staff resources has been done primarily in organized practice settings such as group model HMOs or in government-sponsored health systems. ... In terms of concurrent measures of resource requirements v. future predictions, most established health plans or providers wouldn’t likely see rapid enough change to require the use of predictive analytics on top of real-time/con-current analytics. But newly formed ACOs or a dual-eligible demonstration or other entities serving rapidly evolving populations (e.g., related to new ACA enrollment) would need to keep their eyes on such potential change and thus we would recommend such forecasting.” Jonathan Weiner DrPH, Professor & Director, Center for Population Health IT, CEO, ACG Team, Johns Hopkins University
