“EMR vendors are at different levels of maturity as it relates to population health manage-ment, value-based reimbursement and risk-adjusted revenue optimization capabilities. These recent trends have made a business case for clinical document-ation in the structured data elements. Also, population health management capability development has initiated develop-ment of data warehouse to store clinical data (from EMR) as well as bringing in external data (e.g. claims, satisfaction data, etc.). It seems like it would take couple of years for these data warehouses to establish foundational components (e.g. master data management, terminology management, etc.) and get to the valid and reliable level of data needed for predictive analytics. The biggest challenge would be to embed insights from predictive analytics into the EMR clinical workflow.”
Soyal Momin MBA, Vice President, Data and Analytics, Presbyterian Health Services.

Factoid
"Today in America... 95% of predictive modeling is taking place with claims and other admini-strative data. And even though well over 85% of patients’ records are in EMRs,...maybe only 5% or less of this EMR data is used for population-level risk modeling."
