"Data privacy and security is a routine part of healthcare operations and is part of the planning and implementation process for predictive analytics initiatives, as with any other activity. Exchanges of data with third parties merit additional attention and sometimes require encrypting or masking of identifying information and specific data elements, beyond the standard encryption of transmissions. One of the greatest challenges involves state regulations concerning authorizations required for using regional health information exchanges. Current regulations and implementations in our region require written authorizations from patients to use and access HIE data, with usage not being covered by the HIPAA treatment, payment and healthcare operations exemption. Because of the cost of acquiring individual written authorizations, HIE data are largely excluded from population-level analytics in our region.” Howard Brill PhD, Director, Medical Informatics, Monroe Plan for Medical Care

A retrospective cohort study assessing the impact of pharmacist-led, face-to-face counseling in new-to-therapy statin patients found that compared to usual pharmacy care, those patients receiving face-to-face counseling had 7.2% higher adherence. The persistence for the intervention was nearly eight days longer than that of the control group.
