“In the last few years, I have been using a de-indentified public database. To access this database, I had to go through a rigorous review process including an IRB (Institutional Review Board). The additional work of the IRB was helpful, however, in satisfying the data provider that our use was legitimate and that our data security measures were sufficient. For research purposes, it is possible to acquire such data (albeit by jumping through many hoops). Data for program or patient management purposes are a more difficult issue. Here, the hurdles are becoming increasingly onerous. We are not yet at the point where we have to ask individual patients for permission to access data, but I can see this looming on the horizon. This will severely curtail our ability to do studies, prediction and management at the population level.”
