"The first improvement effort, Partnership for Patients, provided a national framework through which hospitals work together to reduce events of patient harm defined as hospital-acquired conditions, healthcare-associated infections and readmissions. In-step, hospitals are implementing best practices and improving transitions across care settings. National efforts resulted in the accelerated adoption of clinical best practices in the acute care setting. An estimated 125,000 lives were saved, three million events of harm were avoided and 28 billion dollars in savings were realized. The initial success supported the continuation of the initiative as HEN 2.0 and now in 2017, a broader model called the Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN) which includes the Quality Improvement Organizations." -Alison L. Hong, MD, Senior Director, Quality and Patient Safety, Connecticut Hospital Association |
