"Emergency department patients who have recently been hospitalized are more than twice as likely to be admitted as those who have not recently been in the hospital. The simple fact of the matter is that the patients who are generally most at risk of readmissions are, for the most part, the ones who have been treated in the emergency department. Of course, there are numerous exceptions, but it is an important correlation to note. Hospitals might, for instance, identify ways to intervene at the time of discharge to reduce emergency department use in the coming days and weeks, or improve the capacity of their emergency departments to safely discharge the patients back to their homes."

-Christopher Marcus, MD, Physician, Emergency Department, St. Regis Community Hospital Pierre, SD

"People living with HIV/AIDS have 1.5 times higher risk of 30-day hospital readmission as those without HIV."
