"COPD is a very common lung condition and one of the top reasons for hospitalizations in the U.S. More than 10% to 20% of these hospitalized patients get readmitted within 30 days. This is at an enormous cost to the system. We wanted to find if sleep apnea (another common disorder) increases the risk of readmission for COPD patients. This was an important question as early recognition and treatment of OSA may reduce readmission rates in this population."
- Sunil Sharma, MD, N. Leroy Lapp Professor and Chief, Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, West Virginia University.

A recent assessment of 430 unplanned hospital readmissions deemed 56 (13%) to be potentially preventable. The main causes for these potentially preventable readmissions were diagnostic (30%), medication (27%) and management problems (27%).

JAMA Network Open: Percentage Decrease in Excess Readmissions of 5 Targeted Conditions for Hospitals with High vs. Low HRRP Financial Incentives

1. 45% greater reduction in readmissions for pneumonia
2. 172% greater reduction in readmissions for acute myocardial infarction
3. 40% greater reduction in readmissions for hip and/or knee surgery
4. 32% greater reduction in readmissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
5. 13% greater reduction in readmissions for heart failure

Notes: From an article entitled, "Association Between Financial Incentives in Medicare's Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program and Hospital Readmission Performance," by Geoffrey J. Hoffman, Ph; Olga Yakusheva, PhD. Study followed 2823 hospitals participating in Medicare's HRRP from 2016 to 2019. Hospitals with greater incentives for readmission avoidance had greater decreases in readmissions compared with hospitals with smaller incentives.
