Mayo Clinic Study Identifies Strategies that Reduce Early
Hospital Readmissions
Dr. Aaron Leppin discusses a study that
found that 30-day readmissions can be reduced by almost 20
percent when specific efforts are taken to prevent them. Key
among these are interventions to help patients deal with the
work passed on to them at discharge.

1. Poverty Level: Patients
living in high poverty neighborhoods have a greater likelihood of being
readmitted.
2. Marital Status: Married patients are
significantly less likely to be readmitted, suggesting they have more
social support than unmarried patients.
