"The promise of remote monitoring as a part of the broader telemedicine movement is undeniable. However, securing physician buy-in is a key barrier that needs to be surmounted. At the moment, physicians are rarely reimbursed for time spent on activities associated with remote monitoring. This will be a problem when it comes to widespread adoption of these activities. Consequently, reimbursement policies will need to be updated before we can truly expect to see a major increase in promoting remote monitoring as a standard of care. While it is likely that such reimbursement changes will take time, the propagation of accountable care organizations and the necessity for healthcare providers to adopt risk (shared savings programs, bundled payments, etc.) has a very real potential to accelerate widespread adoption." -James S. Wagner, RN, MPA, CCM Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations, Four Winds Hospitals |
