"Most nurses will tell you, and the academic studies available back them up on this, that hospitals with higher nurse staffing ratios are less likely to be penalized for excessive readmissions. This being the case, there is not only a strong medical case to improve upon staffing levels, but also a strong business case. Nurse staffing impacts outcomes in many ways, readmissions being only one of them. One of the primary reasons patients are admitted into the hospital in the first place is to receive direct, one-on-one care from nurses. Proper staffing levels allow for manageable workloads, which in turn lead to higher quality care and a reduction in readmissions."
-Cecily Williams-Brown, RN, Faculty Scholar, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing

"Septicemia was found to be the sixth most frequently treated diagnosis in U.S. hospitals in 2010 and the diagnosis with the 24th highest 30-day readmission rate, at 21.0%."
