"The 21st Century Cures Act, which was sponsored, supported and passed in rare bipartisan fashion, begins the process of leveling the playing field for hospitals that work with vulnerable and underserved patient populations. The new law risk-adjusts readmissions measures that have for too long unfairly penalized hospitals for factors such as the socio-demographics of their patient base that are outside of their control. There are many hospitals in our nation that provide care to populations that struggle with external issues such as lack of family support, financial instability, malnutrition and homelessness. If the new law is properly implemented, it will aid hospitals in reducing readmissions among these populations as opposed to unfairly penalizing them."

-Jason Merryman, Director of Marketing, Communications and Advocacy, Dignity Health, St. Mary's Medical Center
