"Early evidence for VBID [value-based insurance design] suggests it is a
promising option for employers looking to improve outcomes and decrease
the cost of care by expanding access to high-value clinical services. As
more employers implement it, evidence for it in the private sector will
continue to grow. The full potential of VBID for employers is yet to be
realized."
- Patricia Darnley, Senior Vice President of Government
Programs, Optima.

Pitney Bowes "set the
cost sharing for diabetes and asthma medications according to the value
of medication adherence rather than the cost of the drugs, lowering
coinsurance rates to 10%. Following the change, “ER visits fell 35% for
diabetes patients and 20% for asthma patients. Pitney Bowes' VBID
[value-based insurance design] strategy "returned $1.33 in savings for
every $1.00 spent in the three years that followed."
