"We know that when we do these transition of care visits properly, we reduce the readmissions, which is high dollars of waste. It really does fit well into a value-based agreement model."
-William K. Johnjulio, MD, chair of Allegheny Health Network Primary Care Institute; medical director of Physician Partners of Western Pennsylvania.

A recent survey from the National Association of ACOs found almost 80% of ACOs are very concerned about the effect of COVID-19 on their 2020 performance. 90% of responding ACOs say the pandemic will have a “significant or very significant effect” on ACOs’ ability to earn shared savings. The results “paint a potentially grim picture for ACOs and the move to value,” the report says.

1. Amend value-based care contracts mid-term using a unilateral amendment clause, if the contract permits.
2. Disregard performance data from the crisis period.
3. Pause downside risk for 2020 and likely 2021.
